Building a preventive maintenance schedule for a medium-duty truck
A preventive maintenance schedule is the difference between deciding when your truck is in the shop and having that decided for you on the side of the road. The trucks that break down and the trucks that fail inspections are almost always the ones nobody put on a schedule. Here is how to build one that fits the work.
Miles, hours, or time, whichever comes first
A truck that runs the highway racks up miles. A truck that idles a job site racks up hours without many miles. A truck that sits half the year still needs service on a calendar. A good schedule triggers on whichever comes first, so a low-mileage truck does not skip a year and a hard-running one does not stretch an interval it cannot afford.
What belongs on a PM
A real PM is more than an oil change. Oil and filters, fuel and air filters, and the fluids people forget until they fail. A look at the brakes, the steering and suspension, the tires, and the lights. Belts, hoses, and batteries, the wear items that strand a truck. And a check for leaks before they become a puddle and a tow.
Tier it so it makes sense
Most shops run PM in tiers. A short-interval service covers oil, filters, and a safety look-over. A longer-interval service adds the bigger items like fuel filters, differential and transmission fluid, and a deeper inspection. You do not do everything every visit, you do the right things at the right interval, which keeps the cost sane and the truck covered.
Track the due dates
A schedule you do not track is not a schedule. The trucks that lapse are the ones where the date lived in somebody's head. We track service and inspection due dates so nothing slips, which matters even more once you are running more than one or two trucks. That is the heart of our fleet programs.
Pair it with the inspection
The smart move is to run your annual DOT inspection on a service visit. We service the truck, inspect it to the federal standard, and fix anything it flags in the same stop. One trip, one shop, a truck that leaves legal and ready. Our preventive maintenance work is built around exactly that. Call 720.312.7095 and we will set a schedule that fits your truck.
