Why your plow won't lift or angle: the hydraulic and wiring faults we see most
A plow that will not lift or angle stops the job cold. The good news is that almost every one of these problems traces to one of three places: the hydraulics, the controller, or the wiring. Knowing how to narrow it down gets the blade moving again faster. Here is how we work it.
Start with the obvious
Before anything else, check the fluid and the connections. Low or cold hydraulic fluid makes a plow slow, weak, or dead, and thick cold fluid acts like a fault until it warms. A loose or corroded plug between the truck and the plow will kill lift, angle, or both. A surprising number of dead plows come back to life with a clean connection and the right fluid at the right level.
The electrical side
If the fluid and connections are good, the problem is usually electrical. The lift and angle functions are run by solenoids and coils that fire when you hit the controller. A bad solenoid, a failed coil, a weak ground, or a corroded connector means the valve never opens, so the pump runs but nothing moves, or one function works and another does not. We trace the circuit to find which one, instead of swapping parts and hoping.
The pump and the valves
A plow that lifts slowly or strains usually has a weak pump motor or a sticking valve. The motor draws hard current, so it leans on the truck's batteries and charging system too. If the truck itself is low on power, the plow feels weak even when the plow is fine, which is why we look at the engine and drivetrain charging side when the symptoms point that way.
The controller
If a single function is dead but the others work, the controller or its wiring is a prime suspect. Controllers take abuse in the cab and the connectors loosen. We test it rather than assume it.
Get it moving
Most lift and angle problems are a fluid, a connector, a solenoid, or a pump, and we test the system to find which one instead of guessing. We service and repair Boss and SnowEx plows, and we can usually get a down plow going again quickly once we know which of the three it is. Call the shop at 720.312.7095.
